GTC Ikotun Attains 50-Bike Fleet First School in Our Pilot Programme

Following the initial deployment of 20 bicycles to Government Technical College, Ikotun, an additional 30 bicycles have now been delivered, bringing the school’s total fleet under our pilot programme to 50. This milestone represents more than numbers. It reflects improved access, safer school commutes, and stronger attendance consistency for students. Structured mobility support is proving to be a practical lever for education outcomes, and GTC Ikotun now stands as the first school in the pilot to reach this benchmark. We continue to scale deliberately building access where it is needed most.

The Eighth UN Global Road Safety Week in Lagos: Gabriel Rotimi Aroge (GRA) Empowerment Foundation team visit FRSC

To mark the Eighth United Nations Global Road Safety Week, the Gabriel Rotimi Aroge (GRA) Empowerment Foundation, in partnership with the Lagos State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), reaffirmed its commitment to safer roads for pedestrians and cyclists. The engagement, held at the FRSC Command Headquarters in Ojodu Berger, brought together stakeholders from government, development organizations, and safety experts to reflect on the theme “Make Walking and Cycling Safe.” Represented by its Programme Coordinator, the GRA Foundation emphasized that road safety is a critical development issue, closely linked to education access, public health, environmental sustainability, and economic inclusion. The Foundation highlighted its Cycle 2 School Plus initiative, which provides free bicycles to underserved schoolchildren in Lagos State, improving school access while supporting climate-friendly mobility. The initiative aligns with key UN Sustainable Development Goals, including Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Quality Education (SDG 4), and Climate Action (SDG 13). The Foundation also acknowledged the support of FRSC Lagos, whose partnership helped strengthen collaboration with UK-based partner Re-Cycle (Bikes to Africa), which has pledged 1,000 bicycles to the programme. The Lagos FRSC Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Ganiyu Hamzat, stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility and called for improved infrastructure such as pedestrian walkways, cycling lanes, clear signage, and stronger enforcement. He also highlighted the role of technology and education in reducing road risks. The session concluded with an open dialogue, media engagement, and plans for continued collaboration, including activities to mark World Bicycle Day in June. This builds on earlier joint road safety advocacy efforts held in Epe, in partnership with the African Cycling Foundation. Through sustained advocacy, community engagement, and strategic partnerships, the GRA Empowerment Foundation remains committed to advancing safe, inclusive, and sustainable mobility solutions for Nigerian children and communities. The Foundation welcomes partners to support and scale the Cycle 2 School Plus programme.

Crash Victims Remembrance Day: GRA Partners LASTVEB, Launches Free Distribution Of 500 Bicycles To Lagos Schools

As part of activities marking the 2025 United Nations World Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims, we launched a school cycling mobility programme in partnership with the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB) to improve road safety and transportation access for secondary school students. The initiative, Cycle-to-School-Plus (C2S+), was flagged off at Government Technical College, Ikotun, with the commissioning and first-phase distribution of 500 bicycles to selected government-owned schools in Lagos. This marks the beginning of a long-term cycling and mobility empowerment project. Through C2S+, we are promoting safe commuting, discipline, and transportation equity. Beneficiaries are selected through structured route mapping, screening, and road-risk assessments, and students are trained and monitored on safe riding practices. The bicycles remain school-owned and are passed on to new students after graduation. Beyond mobility, the programme supports skills development. In collaboration with LASTVEB, we are introducing training in bicycle engineering, repairs, and road safety, aligning with technical education and future vocational opportunities. The event also featured a road safety video skit competition, with Community Junior Grammar School emerging winner and receiving a ₦100,000 cash prize and safety materials. With more schools already mapped for the next phase in Alimosho, C2S+ stands as our tribute to lives lost in road crashes and a practical step toward safer, more affordable, and responsible school commuting across Lagos.

Bicycle Distribution Begins: First Batch Delivers 20 Bicycles to Government Technical College, Ikotun

We have begun the distribution of free bicycles to students of Government Technical College (GTC), Ikotun, Lagos, under our Cycle to School Plus (C2S+) initiative. This programme is designed to reduce transportation challenges for students from low-income backgrounds and make daily access to education easier. The first phase launched on Friday, January 30, 2026, after completing all eligibility and safety checks. We prioritised students who travel long distances to school, following a detailed route survey and stakeholder consultations with parents, school leadership, and alumni representatives. Safety remains central to C2S+. All beneficiaries are required to follow road safety rules and use protective gear, including helmets and high-visibility jackets. We are grateful to the GTC Ikotun Old Students’ Association for donating 50 reflective jackets to support this effort. We also adopted digital tools to promote transparency, sharing shortlisted names and consent forms through online platforms. Distribution is being rolled out in phases and depends on compliance with programme requirements, availability of safety equipment, and volunteer support. Through C2S+, we are improving school attendance, supporting academic performance, and promoting sustainable, environmentally friendly transportation. We remain committed to expanding this initiative through collaboration with communities, partners, and stakeholders.
